For this painting, I used the influence of the Inuit mask and traditional designs within the abstraction such as whales and fish. Inuit are a marine people, dependent on the Arctic Ocean for transportation and its marine resources for food security. This connection to land and ice gives Inuit a great sense of pride and community well-being which is now threatened by global warming. The ocean in this painting surrounds images of the central Inuit traditions, capturing bubbles that show a visual reality to the crisis within our planet's oceans. To name a few issues include plastics, industrial chemical waste, bleaching of coral reefs, lost fishing nets, garbage and waste dumping and indiscriminate mass over fishing.
